What is Reiki?

While Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a common form of treatment throughout the world, its many benefits are only now becoming recognized by western medicine.

Reiki is an easily learned technique that utilizes gentle hand placements to transmit healing energy. The technique is based on the belief that there is a universal life force flowing in and through all living things. When this energy is low or blocked, we are more likely to get sick and feel stressed. A Reiki session restores this flow of energy that in turn naturally balances the body, mind and spirit.

The word “Reiki” is formed from two Japanese calligraphs or kanji:

Rei, meaning “universal”

Ki, meaning “life force energy”

The concept of drawing life force energy into the body isn’t new. Reiki is believed to be at least 2,500 years old, originating in Tibet. The Chinese intention of “moving chi" to bring harmony into the body is the foundation for the proven modalities of acupuncture, acupressure, tai chi, and qi gong. In India, the related concept of “drawing prana” is a significant component of yoga's aim to move an individual into increased wellbeing and enlightenment.
Reiki was “rediscovered” in the 20th century by Japanese Christian educator Dr. Mikao Usui. His method of rebalancing each person’s life force energy, called the Usui Method of Natural Healing, has been communicated by Master to student for the past century and is now practiced throughout the world.
