What is Massage
Therapy?
Massage is believed to be one of the oldest forms of medical
care, dating back to the pharaohs of ancient Egypt. Its vital
role in healthcare was universal. In 2700 BC, a Chinese book
of internal medicine recommended “the massage of skin and
flesh”. More than two thousand years later, Hippocrates – the
father of modern medicine – wrote that “the physician
must be acquainted with many things and assuredly with rubbing” (the
ancient Greek word for massage). Today, the term massage therapy
is used to describe the manipulation of soft tissue – muscles,
skin and/or tendons – by fingertips, hands, fists, elbows
and even feet. Bodywork is a general term for manual techniques
that involve touch and movement and are used to promote health
and healing. Almost a quarter of all American adults have received
at least one massage in the past twelve months. And the number
continues to grow as more and more people discover the benefits
of massage – for relaxation, rehabilitation and rejuvenation.
What are benefits of Massage Therapy?

fluids

- Enhances tissue elasticity
- And more
What types of Massage Therapy are offered at The Reiki Center?
-
Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue Massage is a technique that focuses on the deeper
layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns
of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger
pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going
across the fibers of the muscles, tendons and fascia. The purpose
is to retrain the fibers of a muscle while releasing deeply-held
patterns of tension, removing toxins, while relaxing and soothing
the muscle. It is both corrective and therapeutic.
-
Stress Relief
Stress permeates every aspect of our lives, but many people do
not consider the overwhelming effect it has on health and wellness.
Its effects can be felt physically, mentally, and emotionally.
Everyday life can be as stressful as overwhelming events. As
a first line of defense, massage can aid in grounding and centering.
Massage helps restore balance, providing relief from the sometimes
helpless, out-of-control feeling that stress can cause. The
techniques associated with stress relief are more general in
nature, applied in a more relaxed manner and can promote a
general sense of well-being.
-
Trigger Point (Neuromuscular Therapy)
Neuromuscular (Trigger Point) Massage is a successful therapy
for pain relief. The techniques used very specifically target
knots in muscle and other related tissues that trigger pain.
Direct pressure within the client’s comfort zone is applied
to the points, helping them to release painful holding patterns.
It is an excellent choice in treating acute or chronic tension,
pain or injury.
